Guidance/Counseling
Sesser-Valier High School maintains an active guidance & counseling program.  The information listed below is intended to help SVHS students and parents keep informed about student assessments, college entrance/registration/application requirements, scholarships (applications, deadlines, etc.), student scheduling, and how to request academic records.

Student Assessment

SAT - All juniors will take the SAT. This is a state requirement for graduation. 
 
PSAT 10 - All sophomore students will take the PSAT. This is a state requirement.

PSAT 9 - All freshmen will take the PSAT. This is a state requirement.


ACT - Juniors will need to sign up on www.act.org to take the ACT exam.
Students wanting to retake the ACT should visit the ACT website at  www.act.org to register to take the test. Test dates and information regarding the test are available on the ACT website. 

AP Testing
AP tests will be in May.  Please turn in your first payment on or before 10/20/2023. See Mrs. Henry if you have any questions.

College Information

    Representatives from the following colleges/universities will be conducting informational meetings at Sesser-Valier High School:

There are no representatives scheduled to visit at this time.

Seniors planning to attend a four-year university in the fall of 2024 need to start applying for admission. Also, check college websites for open house dates. Open houses are a great way to gain a lot of information about each college/university.


      
    College/Military Visitation

        A senior is permitted two visits to a college or university of his/her choice providing the following requirements are met: (1) the student notifies his or her teachers prior to leaving and completes the necessary forms. Even though the student is not in attendance, he/she shall not be counted absent. (2) A student must be eligible to  graduate in order to secure a college visit. (3) All visitations should be prior to the month of May, and one visit shall be on the first day of the Prairie State Exam. (A third college or university visit may be approved by school administration if a senior must complete an on-campus college exam for admission, must complete and on-campus task for receipt of a scholarship, or must attend a required orientation day.
       
    Financial Aid 

 Seniors the financial aid application will be available starting January 1, 2024.   The financial aid application/information will be available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.  It is recommended that the FAFSA be completed by March 1, 2024.   PLEASE COMPLETE THE FAFSA AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

The SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital has a scholarship available for seniors planning to pursue a degree in a healthcare related field. The deadline is 03/29/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The SIU Credit Union has a scholarship available to seniors. The deadline is 03/29/2024. The application is available at www.siucu.org. See Mrs. Henry if you have any questions.

The Bartolotti Scholarship is available to seniors. The deadline is 03/29/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an information sheet.

The Tom Mygatt Scholarship is available to seniors. The deadline is 03/29/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an information sheet.


The Schoenbaechler Scholarship is available to seniors who participate in one or more sports. The deadline is 03/31/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The Curt Johnston Scholarship is available to any senior. The deadline is 03/31/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

Crosswalk Community Action Agency has a scholarship available to seniors who meet certain income guidelines. The deadline is 04/01/2023. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The William J. Swinney Scholarship is available to seniors. The deadline is 04/05/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The Boneyard Boccie Ball Club Scholarship is available to seniors. The deadline is 04/05/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The Morgan Phelps Stubblefield Memorial Scholarship application is available to senior female athletes. The deadline is 04/16/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

Eclipse Insurance Agency LLC has a scholarship available to seniors planning to attend Rend Lake College in Fall of 2024 and major in Ag Business/Production, Ag Mechanics, Diesel Tech or Heavy Equipment program. The deadline is 04/30/2024. See Mrs. Henry for an application.
